The Details of Distinction

What to know before, during, and after your Buitengewoon journey

Choosing a hot tub is more than a purchase – it’s the start of a slower, more intentional way of living. Every Buitengewoon hot tub is designed for those who value quality, simplicity, and timeless design. Here, we’ve gathered everything you need to know – from materials and heating, to delivery, care, and ownership. Consider this your guide to effortless outdoor luxury.

Before Purchase

Everything to consider when choosing your perfect soak

From model types and materials to heating methods and site preparation – here’s what you need to know before bringing a Buitengewoon hot tub home.

Coil (external): Open wood-fire experience, heated via natural convection.
Snorkel (submerged): Stove is underwater—ideal for wooden decks or undercover setups.

Choose based on design preference, surface compatibility, and whether you’d like an open flame feature. See more product info here.

No! Both models are completely off-grid, using only wood for heat.

Coil tub: Heated via natural convection—fire inside the coil heats water, which circulates through the stainless steel tubes.

Snorkel tub: Fire burns inside a submerged stainless steel box. Heat radiates directly into the water, aided by internal tubes for faster heating.

Coil model: ±75–120 minutes
Snorkel model: ±60–105 minutes

– Seats 3–5 people
– 750–850 L water capacity
– 155 cm diameter × 60 cm depth (inner), 176cm diameter x 72cm (H) (outer)
– Approx. 70 kg (coil model), 100 kg (snorkel model) when empty; approx. 1000kg (coil model), 1400kg (snorkel model) with water and people.

Inner shell: Marine-grade vinylester resin (luxury yacht standard) – durable, heat-retaining, and polishable to restore shine over time.

Cladding: Choose between CCA-treated pine or RhinoWood – both strong, weather-resistant, and visually refined.

– (Coil, snorkel stove, and flue: High-quality marine-grade stainless steel
– Rocket stove (optional coil model accessory): Corten steel – designed to weather naturally, forming a protective and rustic patina

CCA-treated pine: A warm-toned, cost-effective timber treated for long-term resistance to moisture, insects, and decay, ensuring your tub remains beautiful season after season.

Rhino wood: A premium, thermally modified hardwood with rich, natural tones. Highly durable and low-maintenance, it’s designed to withstand the elements while ageing with elegance.

Place your tub on a hard, level surface. When filled, the tub weighs over 1 ton, so we don’t recommend placing it directly on soft ground as the ground may move causing an even surface.

Only the snorkel model is suitable for decks or other heat-sensitive surfaces, thanks to its submerged and insulated fire chamber.

Each hot tub has:
– An inlet tap (connect a hose or plumbed-in water source)
– An outlet ball valve outlet (can connect piping to direct water to a greywater or waste system)

Our hot tubs are designed for full comfort and full submersion. Built-in seating often limits how deeply you can immerse yourself in the water, especially in colder weather, when full-body warmth matters most.

Instead, we’ve shaped the tub with a gently curved wall for natural back support, and included a non-slip base so you can choose how you sit – upright, reclined, or even cross-legged, depending on your mood, your company, and the moment.

Yes! We’ve installed tubs at hundreds of accommodations across South Africa. Most report increased guest satisfaction, occupancy, and revenue. See some of the accommodations featuring a Buitengewoon Hot Tub here.

Covers (wooden or canvas), drinks trays, mixing paddles and the rocket stove (for coil model). See more on accessories here.

– Flue & flue cap (for snorkel model)
– Wooden cladding
– Instruction / usage guide

Accessories are optional and sold separately.

Yes! The only parts to install on site are related to the heater, and our step-by-step instructions make it easy.

– 3 years on the coil heater
– 1 year on wooden cladding
– 1 year on fibreglass shell
– 1 year on accessories

Warranty covers manufacturing faults only; valid from delivery date. Keep your invoice or order confirmation.

We recommend soft firewood like pine or blue gum. Avoid briquettes or hard woods that burn too hot and may damage the system.

Typically around 20 pieces, depending on model and starting water temperature.

Use your mixing paddle to stir periodically. This helps evenly distribute the heat. When the water is nearly ready, stop adding wood and allow the fire to burn down naturally. To keep the hot tub warm for long periods – add 1/2 pieces of wood onto the fire per hour.

Using your hot tub

Maintenance & Accessories

Care, comfort, and thoughtful additions

Keep your hot tub in excellent condition with ease and care.

Without filtration or chemicals: ±4 days.
You can extend this by attaching a small portable pool pump to the inlet and outlet, especially useful during frequent use periods.

Once cooled and free from chlorine or harsh chemicals, you can reuse your hot tub water to irrigate your garden, water lawns, wash your car, clean outdoor furniture or paving, or even fill ponds and water features – either using it straight away or run it into a storage tank for later use.

Water-saving tip: Keeping a rainwater storage system on your property is a great way to sustainably fill your hot tub – reducing reliance on municipal water and making the most of natural resources.

To clean your hot tub, simply empty it, give the inner shell a light wipe-down with a little washing liquid, and rinse well. For the coil or snorkel heater, empty out any ash using a small brush and pan, or an outdoor vacuum if you prefer – the ash doesn’t need to be removed after every use, only when necessary. View our caring for your hot tub blog for more info.

Your hot tub can be used all year around. Cool in the summer months and heated in the winter.  But should you want to close it up for a while, drain fully, clean, and cover using either our wooden or canvas covers to protect from UV damage and debris.
